They provide telephone support and advice to families and professionals initially. Family support often starts with a home visit to explain our services.

Penhaligon’s Friends was first formed in 1995 by 3 professionals; a teacher, psychologist and a MacMillan nurse; who identified that bereaved children in Cornwall were being referred to mental health practitioners for bereavement support. Most children need minimal intervention to normalise and validate their feelings, not psychological support.

Megan's Story:

Megan was referred to our service in 2008, aged 7, following the death of her Dad, he took his own life. Megan and her Mum had moved from London to Cornwall. Following initial support, a visit to them at home, we were able to support the school with ideas on managing Megan’s grief in that environment and the family then came to a Memory Day. Megan was able to meet others and share her story. She accessed some 1-1 support a little later following another significant bereavement.

She was re-referred to us in 2011 by her secondary school when her step dad left the family home. She was isolated from her peer group and struggling with her emotions quite significantly. Megan was able to join our nearest teens group and is still coming along most months now. She has realised she is not alone with her feelings and reports that she is happier and has good friendships.
