Ryan Newman’s daughter makes light of his Daytona 500 crash

Despite Brooklyn Newman witnessing her father’s terrifying crash on the final lap of the 2020 Daytona 500, she made the decision to pursue racing. Newman’s near-fatal crash deeply affected his family, but it didn’t deter Brooklyn from following her passion. Newman had been teaching Brooklyn to drive from a young age, instilling in her a love for speed and competition. Starting with driving his truck sitting on his lap at the age of 4 and then progressing to a quarter-midget, she showed natural aptitude and enthusiasm for racing.

Now, she is a regular at a few of the North Carolina dirt tracks. Recently, Autoweek met up with Ryan Newman and Brooklyn on one of the tracks to talk about her progress. One of the topics that came up was Newman’s near-fatal crash. Reflecting back on the horrifying crash, Brooklyn playfully pointed out that some drivers are too slow when approaching the finish line. She cheekily reminded her father of his race at Daytona, remarking, “When you were going at Daytona, you were so slow that the cars behind you were catching you.” Ryan, pretending not to recall, asked Brooklyn how he performed during the race.

In response, Brooklyn animatedly imitated an explosion sound effect and gestured with her hands. The exchange continued with Ryan maintaining a calm demeanor and Brooklyn’s mischievous spirit shining through. She teasingly suggested that her father had forgotten the crash because he was “sleeping.”

Despite the terrifying incident at the Daytona 500, Ryan Newman’s bond with his daughter shines through in their light-hearted exchange.
